How high should a bar stool be?
The right height of your bar stool mainly depends on the height of your tabletop or kitchen island. As a guideline, you want 25 to 30 cm of space between the seat of your bar stool and the underside of the tabletop. This way, you sit comfortably and have enough legroom.
Bar stool height guideline
Kitchen counter / kitchen island (± 90 cm high)
→ Choose a bar stool with a seat height of 60–65 cm
High bar table (± 105 cm high)
→ Choose a bar stool with a seat height of 75–80 cm
✅ Tip: always measure the height of the underside of the tabletop at home (not the top), because that is where your knee space is.
How many bar stools fit at my kitchen island?
Allow approximately 55–60 cm width per person so you sit comfortably and have enough elbow room.
For a kitchen island of:
120 cm → 2 bar stools
160 cm → 3 bar stools
200 cm → 3 to 4 bar stools
Tip: do you choose bar stools with armrests? Then you often need a bit more space.
